My main issues with simply lumping into Web 2.0 is that a) Web 2.0 itself remains very much an undefined term...ask 10 technologists to definse Web 2.0 and they'll give you 10 different answers, and b) as you know well, the enterprise world is so vastly different in the motivating factors, pace of innovation, challenges to facilitate change, etc...from consumer computing and software uptake that I feel it HAS to be delineated.

Keep up the good blogging,

Jason

Anshu, I really appreciate your detailed discussio...

Anshu, I really appreciate your detailed discussion of this. As you know from my blog post, I'm looking at the relationship between Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 from a social perspective rather than purely technological. I don't feel optimistic about an "Enterprise 2.0" revolution, because I don't think hosting apps or SOA-tizing them or giving users mashups is enough to qualify for the moniker.

What would qualify? Imagine that the user browsing a catalog to purchase something can actually make a mashup herself and distribute it to other users. This means (1) she needs the right tools and (2) she needs to have authority to do so. Both of those are really hard problems, but to me, they are also critical parts of Web 2.0: individuals being able to make and publish things themselves, without asking permission, and without hiring experts (in this case, internal IT or an external provider).

Re: did we ever finish Enterprise 1.0? If that means ERP apps, I guess the answer is no. I recently saw a chart of Oracle Apps 11i bugs--how depressing.

People have heard a lot about Web 2.0 and Enterpri...

People have heard a lot about Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 lately. I can see a similarity here that I think might help to distinguish between these two, and REA and RIA. Most of the talk surrounding Web 2.0 has been focused on the social collaborative aspects that it brings to users. I agree with this. Now take all of this (Web 2.0) and enable governance and security and commercial-grade reliability and you have a Web 2.0 model that is fit for an enterprise (Enterprise 2.0)

Vinnie,
I do agree with you that the business ...

Vinnie,
I do agree with you that the business model is changing and that vendors will have to adopt to the changing reality.
